Substrate Gallery featured modern art associated with various forms of music, becoming the first gallery of its kind in Los Angeles. The gallery showcased art of Peter Saville who designed album covers for Joy Division and New Order. Natty Brooker responsible for the aesthetics of Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized records. The gallery featured art by Will Sergeant a founding member of Echo and the Bunnymen, as well as the art of Daniel Ash a member of Bauhaus, Tones on Tails, and Love and Rockets. Substrate featured photography exhibits for The John Denver Estate, Martin Hausler and Jon Evan Glaser, as well as paintings by Beth Bowen. Substrate featured artworks by Pop Levi. Art critic Peter Frank lectured at Substrate Gallery in 2007. Many short films and music videos were filmed at Substrate Gallery, including Singapore Sling's “Life is Killing My Rock n' Roll”, filmed by Phillip Lopez for Fault Magazine. The gallery featured “Factory of Light” a multi-media event screening Jean Balest’s music video for House of Light. The Madrid based electro-punk band the LA Drones performed.
Substrate Gallery was founded in the Spring of 2004 by Ramses Granados, a Los Angeles based artist, curator and musician. Substrate Gallery closed its doors Spring 2022. Artist Ramses’ major art collectors include Bill Gates (Microsoft), the late actress Carrie Fisher (Star Wars), musician Courtney Taylor (The Dandy Warhols), and Ivy League and Johns Hopkins-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Jon Zelken, among others.
